Learning Social Behaviors During Human-Robot Play
نویسنده
چکیده
The Problem: This work explores socially situated learning by exploiting the types of interaction that arise between a nurturing caretaker and an immature learner. Here, the learner is an anthropomorphic robotic platform. Its primary sensory inputs include vision, audition, and joint rotation of its degrees of freedom. Its outputs include vocalizations, head and eye orientation, and facial expressions. The robot is designed to be an altricial system, similar in spirit to a human infant. That is, the robot starts off in a rather helpless and primitive condition, and requires the help of a sophisticated and benevolent caretaker to learn and develop. The interaction between the caretaker robot is purely social, much like how a mother interacts with her infant. The sorts of capabilities targeted for learning are those social and communication skills exhibited by human infants within the first year of life.

Designing Gaze Behavior for Humanlike Robots
Humanlike robots are designed to communicate with people using human verbal and nonverbal language. Social gaze cues play an important role in this communication. Although research in human-robot interaction has shown that people understand these gaze cues and interpret them as valid signals for human communication, whether they can serve as effective communicative mechanisms and lead to signif...

متن کاملNonverbal Behavior Modeling for Socially Assistive Robots
The field of socially assistive robotics (SAR) aims to build robots that help people through social interaction. Human social interaction involves complex systems of behavior, and modeling these systems is one goal of SAR. Nonverbal behaviors, such as eye gaze and gesture, are particularly amenable to modeling through machine learning because the effects of the system—the nonverbal behaviors th...
متن کاملInfant-like Social Interactions between a Robot and a Human Caregiver
From birth, human infants are immersed in a social environment that allows them to learn by leveraging the skills and capabilities of their caregivers. A critical pre-cursor to this type of social learning is the ability to maintain interaction levels that are neither overwhelming nor under-stimulating. In this paper, we present a mechanism for an autonomous robot to regulate the intensity of i...
متن کاملAutomated Caricature of Robot Expressions in Socially Assistive Human-Robot Interaction
Children with autism spectrum disorder suffer from a deficit that prevents them from observing, interpreting, and learning social cues. Clinical studies in social skills training have proposed methods, such as exaggeration, to enhance autism intervention strategies. Socially assistive robotics is an area of human-robot interaction that has the potential to improve social activity. Inspired by s...
